Cutting to the Beat for Sunburn - Muse

Cutting to the Beat

Lyrics: Sunburn - Muse

I/I/I/I/I

Come waste your millions / here
Secretly she sneers / /
Another corporate show /
A guilty conscience grows / /
I'll feel / a guilty conscience / grow
I'll feel a / guilty conscience / grow

She burns / like / the sun
And I can't look away (1 minute)
And she'll burn our horizons make no mistake

Come let the truth be shared
No-one ever dared
To break these endless lies
Secretly she cries

She burns like the sun
And I can't look away
And she'll burn our horizons make no mistake

And I'll hide from the world
Behind a broken frame
And I'll burn forever
I can't face the shame

And I'll hide from the world
Behind a broken frame
And I'll burn forever
I can't face the shame

Cutting to the Beat for The Suburbs - Arcade Fire

Cutting to the Beat

Lyrics: Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

I/I/I/I/I/I/I

In the suburbs I/
I learned to drive/
And you told/ me we'd never survive/
Grab your mother's/ keys we're leavin'/

- 1 minute

 You always seemed so sure
That one day we'd be fighting
In a suburban war
Your part of town against mine
I saw you standing on the opposite shore

But by the time the first bombs fell
We were already bored
We were already, already bored

Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm movin' past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm movin' past the feeling again

Kids wanna be so hard
But in my dreams we're still screamin' and runnin' through the yard
And all of the walls that they built in the seventies finally fall
And all of the houses they built in the seventies finally fall
Meant nothin' at all
Meant nothin' at all
It meant nothing

Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm movin' past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm movin' past the feeling and into the night

So can you understand?

Why I want a daughter while I'm still young
I wanna hold her hand
And show her some beauty
Before all this damage is done

But if it's too much to ask, it's too much to ask

Then send me a son

Under the overpass
In the parking lot we're still waiting
It's already past
So move your feet from hot pavement and into the grass
Cause it's already past
It's already, already past

Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm movin' past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm movin' past the feeling again

I'm movin' past the feeling
I'm movin' past the feeling

In my dreams we're still screamin'
We're still screamin'
We're still screamin'

Analysis of magazine adverts

Analysis of magazine adverts

Blur (Magazine Advert)

This magazine advert is holds the basic simplistic conventions which an advert should have. The colouring is all very similar within this advert and features an oval within the middle, capturing a photograph of racing dogs inside it.

This advert is not notable for reflecting the genre of the bands music. However, it is out of the ordinary, and does not feature a specific convention, which means it could follow the 'indie-rock' genre - being known for going against stereotypes.

The advert would attract Blur's target audience as it stands out from the bold background colour, and also is not stereotypical for music adverts - going against the other genres.

Kendrick Lamar - Rolling Stone (Magazine Advert)

This Rolling Stone magazine advert features Kendrick Lamar sitting down getting his hair done by another person, who shows their stomach, relating with how Rap/RnB is associated with sexual connotations.

This shot is a mid shot, showing the waist upwards. Many magazine adverts are shot using mid shots, as it means that the shot is still personal without being too far away. Kendrick is seen wearing a black baseball jacket, another stereotypical convention which this image portrays.

The text for this magazine is featured on the right hand side with the main title being "The Trials of Kendrick Lamar". This text blends in with the other main stories for this magazine, not standing out, therefore the image is what the magazine have focused on.

Arcade Fire - Q (Magazine Advert)

Arcade Fire are seen here on the front of Q magazine, a popular indie/alternative-rock magazine. The font and colouring for the headline ('Arcade Fire') is incredibly bold, in the centre of the page in bright contrasting colours.

The band are seen wearing bold metallics for costumes, making it easy for the audience to relate with the band. This also connotes with the idea of their genre as well, because indie-alternative is stereotyped for being unconventional but effective, and doing out of the ordinary things.

This is a long shot, as it features the whole bands bodies in the photograph, also linking with the style of the band. The font and lettering used for the magazine cover are all in bright colours, associating the magazine with the band.

This magazine advert would highly attract the target audience of Arcade Fire as it is bold and fun. The band are seen smiling in silver/white costumes behind brightly coloured text - linking with how indie-alternative is different and goes against the typical cliches.

Conventions and analysis of digipaks

Analysis of Digipaks

What is a digipak?

A digipak is a style of CD which is packaged in a unique way in order to promote/advertise that artist. This style of CD tends to be used for special editions, and premium packaging.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (Digipak)

This band orginally originated from Montreal, and are an indie-rock band. It consists of 7 members and have played all around the world, including headling Glastonbury and Coachella Festival.

There are eight different versions of album artwork to 'The Suburbs', which was created by Gabriel Jones.
The main front cover of this digipak consists of a retro car parked infront of an ideal suburban house. The band has its name written in small letering in the right hand corner, making the main image stand out more. This album goes with the title of the album, as it features conventions of suburban elements. The colouring of the images are filtered in a vintage effect, to go with the idea that suburban houses were stereotyped with the 70's.

This image was taken during a road trip around various suburbs in America. It features "The Suburbs" boldly placed on the right hand side, making it obvious to the audience.

On this part of the digipak there are song lyrics from the album contrasting against a filtered background of suburban houses, with a red tint in the corner. All of these colours are quite neutral and earthy, connoting with the stereotype put across from indie-rock bands.

Mac Demarco - Salad Days (Digipak)

Mac Demarco is a Candian singer-songwriter who has fallen into the 'blue wave/slacker-rock' genre. His digi-pak features him on the front in a simplistic format, wearing a typical white basic hat and blue top. This digi-pak follows the simplistic conventions very well, which is what makes it effective, especially to the specific target audience. With the indie-rock genre, laid-back clothing/costumes are highly noticable. This is because they wish to go against the stereotypical mainstream conventions which many other genres follow.

The shading on these pictures has been used to create a better effect which entices the audience into buying the digipak. This is because the fan-base will be made up of Indie-rock listeners, and will like the basic, retro and vintage effects highly put out from this album.

The typography which is shown on the front of the digi-pak is unconventional, however effective since it is like basic hand-writing. This suggests that this artist is out of the ordinary and is trying something new, which the target audience will like as they are stereotyped as following new and different conventions.

The track listings do not follow specific numbers either, they are layed out on the left hand side of the background in white colouring, which makes this digi-pak effective.
