Overboard - Harry Preen
Analysis in RED
Chorus in BLUE
Don’t, you leave us in the cold
Cus’ we have nothing left to hope
Cus’ Im sick of playing bars
Fifty pounds and nothing else
This describes how a person has been left by his friends, and is sick of playing his guitar, not earning much money.
You’re my friend and my surprise
But I will leave you behind
Cus’ you’re not getting,
No you’re not getting anywhere
The main character here is exaggerating how he will leave his friend behind as the friend is not doing anything with their life, and is dragging the main character down.
And when I look for guidance
All I see is a shadow of you
We don’t work for nothing
So what’s the point in working at all?
I will make it happen
With or without you
The first two lines relate to how the main individual does not receive any help or guidance from their friend, but only a shadow. Not only this, but the main character goes on about how they will be successful with their life, with or without their friend.
So if you’re not in it then,
You can jump overboard
These two lines are more aggressive than previous lines, as they put out that the main character is feeling upset because their friend is not helping them at all.
Don’t let things slide down
Cus’ we’ve got a good thing going on
And I will try my best, but sometimes it’s not enough
Here, the main character is showing remorse for their friend, saying that they will try their best to make it work between them, but the friend has to put an equal amount of effort in as well, which sometimes is not enough.
And I can feel your passion fade
The flicker’s simmer
and dies down
But your not worthy, no your not worthy anymore
In these lines, the main character is edging more towards leaving the friend entirely, as within the line 'I can feel your passion fade', it connotes how the friend is not putting any effort in to their relationship, with the main character giving up on it.
And when I look for guidance
All I see is a shadow of you
We don’t work for nothing
So what’s the point in working at all?
I will make it happen
With or without you
So if you’re not in it then,
You can jump overboard
Cus’ success is a fickle thing
You need to taste it to want it more
And redemption is all you want
And only you can settle the score
This verse explains how the main character really wants to succeed in life, more so than their friend, which hints at how they want to make their friend jealous as their way of getting redemption.
